through contemporary art.

Born in Guadeloupe in 1971 from Indian, Indigenous and African descent.

Trained in aesthetics, literature, and experimental cinema at Paris I-Sorbonne.

After 25 years of art, museums and film culture in Paris, Chantaléa returned home to reconnect with her childhood memories in St François, marked by her grandmother’s home, her father’s countryside tractor and roosters chants.

She started creating works reflecting these hybrid universes blending her new culturally mixed family, her relation to flora and fauna, and other imaginary forms of her Caribbean life.

Social criticism meets imaginary motif.

The work addresses the relationships of domination that shape Black and Brown societies, and reveals a language where lines cross between the intimate and the outer world.

A true sanctuary of cultural memories. An open home and heart.

STATEMENT

" My mixed peasant roots opened me up to the world, politics, sociology, and the idea of a 'collective fate.' Quite early on, they made me ready to react quickly to social issues that today pass so fast that reactions have to be adapted. Video or infographics are the mediums of urgency. I was lucky to work with digital tools from my early years at the Sorbonne alongside using Super 8. I'm influenced by cinematic writing, even in painting composition, which often takes the form of a fragmented storyboard, with scenes 'in motion' juxtaposed.

Some paintings even originate from a filmed staging, sometimes with input from those around me."
